  • This Week’s Columbia TN Kids Guide • July 21st-27th

July 21st–27th brings a steady rhythm of summer activities, with creative one-time events spaced throughout the week and a full Saturday to finish strong. From hands-on art and outdoor story time to seasonal celebrations and school prep support, there’s something happening almost every day that’s worth bookmarking.

    One-time highlights to watch for:

    • Story Time at Needle & Grain with guest reader Friendstore, plus a restock of shop favorites like Moonjax teethers and Blockaroo builders (Wednesday morning)
    • Art Days with Color Camp Studio featuring a drop-in watermelon painting project (Wednesday afternoon)
    • Christmas in July at the Columbia Aquatics & Rec Center with ornament crafts and summer “hot cocoa” (Friday)

    • Color Our World Summer Reading Wrap-up with bounce houses, shaved ice, and a live performance of The Wizard of Oz (Saturday morning)

Three school supply distribution events are scheduled for Saturday to help families prepare for the school year. If your family could use the support, this is a great opportunity to stock up on essentials. If you’re already set, sharing the info can make a difference for someone else. You can also take advantage of Tennessee’s Tax-Free Weekend, running Friday through Sunday. School supplies, clothing, and even computers are eligible. Full details are available here.

  • Local School Supply Giveaways 2025 and Tax-Free Weekend Info for Columbia, TN

Local School Supply Giveaways 2025 and Tax-Free Weekend Info for Columbia, TN

I’ve seen several posts recently from parents looking for school supply assistance in Columbia, TN, and with back-to-school just around the corner, I thought it might help to round up all the local school supply giveaway events I’ve been able to find.

These are typically designed to support families who could use a little help covering school-related expenses. If you’re in that spot, I hope you find an event here that works with your schedule. While Columbia TN Kids Guide typically shares events that focus on younger kids, this roundup includes resources for school-age children, including incoming kindergarteners who fall into the age range I’m looking to support.

This list includes everything I’ve come across so far, but I know I may have missed something and more events may be added. If you know of additional local school supply events or resources, please email me and I’ll gladly add it.

While school supply shopping isn’t on my list this summer, I spent a big part of my teenage years helping families complete their back to school shopping. Because of this, I know just how stressful and expensive it can be.

Please note: Columbia TN Kids Guide is not affiliated with any of the organizations hosting these events. If you have questions, need more details, or want to confirm anything, please reach out to the event organizers directly. • Fall Sports Sign-Ups for Toddlers and Preschoolers in Columbia & Spring Hill, TN

Fall Sports Sign-Ups for Toddlers and Preschoolers in Columbia & Spring Hill, TN

Programs for ages 0–5 including soccer, flag football, tee-ball, cheer, and more

Someone recently asked me if there are any basketball programs for a 4-year-old in Columbia, TN, and it got me thinking. (Spoiler alert: basketball doesn’t open until spring.) Even though we’re in the middle of summer, fall sports sign-ups are already underway.

It hadn’t crossed my mind since my daughter isn’t quite old enough for most of these programs, but I realized other parents with toddlers and preschoolers might be searching too. So I pulled together everything I could find about local sports opportunities this fall, specifically for families with kids ages 0–5 in Columbia and Spring Hill, TN.

I’ve done my best to include everything that’s open to toddlers and preschoolers this fall, but some youth leagues don’t post updates on a regular basis. A few only share information through schools, flyers, or private social media pages, so there’s a chance I’ve missed something.

You also might recognize a few of these from my summer activity guide. Some programs run year-round and welcome kids as young as 18 months, which is great if you’re just starting to explore organized activities.

To stay true to my goal of focusing on local activities, this guide covers Columbia and Spring Hill only. I know there are more programs out there in Franklin or Nashville, but I wanted to keep things manageable and relevant for families nearby.

If you know of a toddler or preschool sports program in Columbia or Spring Hill that isn’t listed here, I’d love to hear about it. I try to keep these guides as complete and up-to-date as possible, but things change quickly and not every program is easy to find online. Whether it’s something new, something small, or something you’ve personally loved, feel free to email me at columbiatnkidsguide@gmail.com

I hope this roundup helps make finding sport options a little easier. Whether you’re signing your child up for their very first sport or just trying something new this season, I hope you find something fun and low-pressure that fits your family and lifestyle.

  • This Week’s Columbia TN Kids Guide • July 14–20

July 14th – 20th rolls in quietly, then finishes with a Saturday sprint of markets, crafts, music, and a family movie night around Columbia and Spring Hill. Weekly staples anchor the schedule: library story times, Bubble Fun and Tinkering Station at aMuse’um, and an early-start stroller workout that beats the heat. A handful of one-time events add variety before Saturday packs the calendar from morning to night.

    One-time highlights to watch for:

    • Summer Pop-up from A Worthy Cause with games and splash-pad water play at Riverwalk Park (Saturday late morning)
    • Lego Block Party for creative builders at Columbia Aquatics & Recreation — membership or day pass required (Thursday morning)
    • Flower Pot Painting at Woodland Park followed by Park Play Day with a giant soccer-dart game in Spring Hill (both Friday)
    • Story Time with Blue Gene Bookshop featuring Camellia Chocolates as guest reader, plus a take-home craft (Saturday morning)

Be sure to scroll down for the full day-by-day guide, especially for Saturday. There are even more events than could fit in the social media graphic. The full schedule includes times, costs, and quick notes to help you plan.

Note: You may notice a few school supply giveaways listed in the blog and calendar, but not included on the social media graphics. That’s intentional. While these events are helpful for families with kids entering kindergarten and up, they aren’t the best fit for most families in the 0–5 age range. I still wanted to include them here in case they’re helpful to you or someone you know.

  • Lead in Kid’s Snacks: What Every Parent Should Know

Lead in Kid’s Snacks: What Every Parent Should Know

When our daughter’s lead test came back elevated, we were surprised but also grateful we had asked for it.

We live in an older home, so we knew lead exposure was a possibility. At her 15-month checkup, we requested the test just to be cautious. We hadn’t seen any warning signs and weren’t overly worried, but we wanted to be thorough.

Once we got the results, we started trying to figure out where the lead might be coming from. We tested our home. We checked our water filters. We began looking more closely at the foods and snacks she was eating.

That’s when I came across Lead Safe Mama, a resource I hadn’t known about before. I already knew that some baby products like pouches and formula had tested for lead in the past. But I was surprised to see that some of the very snacks we had been giving her, products from reputable brands, were still testing with elevated levels of lead.

The Unexpected Sources of Lead in Baby and Toddler Food

As we searched for answers, we found two key resources that every parent should know about:

    • Consumer Reports has tested dozens of baby and toddler products, including pouches, snacks, and formulas. Their investigations have found that many contain elevated levels of heavy metals like lead, arsenic, and cadmium.
    • Lead Safe Mama, an independent testing resource, has found similar results. Her team tests everyday products, including popular snacks and household items, and publishes detailed reports online.

Some of the very snacks we had been giving our daughter showed up on those lists.

These were familiar, widely available snacks from brands we had come to trust. They were marketed as organic or allergy-friendly, and nothing about them raised red flags until we saw the testing data.

    The Problem with Root-Based Ingredients

Cassava and other root vegetables, like arrowroot, are common in toddler snacks, especially those labeled grain-free or gluten-free. These ingredients may sound harmless, but they come with a hidden risk. Because root plants pull nutrients from deep in the soil, they can also absorb heavy metals like lead if the soil is contaminated.

Labels like “clean,” “natural,” and “organic” can sound reassuring, but they don’t guarantee a product has been tested for heavy metals. In some cases, the snacks with the healthiest branding have shown some of the highest lead levels in independent tests.

Lead is a naturally occurring element, and some exposure in food may be unavoidable. It is found in soil, water, and even the air. But experts agree that no level of lead is considered safe for young children. Because their bodies are still developing, even small amounts can build up over time and have lasting effects on brain development, learning ability, behavior, and growth. While we may not be able to eliminate every trace of lead from our children’s diets, being aware of higher-risk ingredients and products can help us make more mindful choices.

After reading the test results, we removed cassava-based snacks from our pantry. We tried one arrowroot-based option as an alternative, but it didn’t stay in rotation for long. We focused on more whole foods instead, like fresh fruits, vegetables, and less processed choices that felt safer while we figured things out.

By the time of our daughter’s next lead test, her levels had dropped. That gave us some peace of mind. But it also left us wondering how many other families have no idea this risk even exists.

What We Learned About Lead Testing

Our child’s blood lead level was 7 micrograms per deciliter (µg/dL), which is more than double the CDC’s current reference level of 3.5 µg/dL. That is the point at which action is recommended.

There is debate around the exact thresholds, but one thing is clear: no amount of lead is considered safe for young children. Even low levels can affect brain development, attention, and behavior.

What stood out to us was how unclear the process actually is. Some parents we spoke to had their children tested at regular intervals, while others said it was never mentioned unless there was a known risk. In our case, we had to bring it up and ask for it directly. There doesn’t seem to be a consistent standard, which makes it easy for elevated levels to go unnoticed.

We also found out that how the test is done can affect the results. At 15 months and again during the retest a few weeks later, our daughter had a heel stick. This type of capillary test is common in younger toddlers, but it can sometimes give a false positive if there is any lead residue on the skin. It is considered a good screening tool, but if levels come back high, many pediatricians will recommend a follow-up blood draw from the arm, which is more accurate.

All of this made us realize how many variables are at play. From when a test is offered to how it is performed and where it is sent, the process is not always as straightforward as we expected.

    What Parents Can Do

If you are feeling overwhelmed, start small. These are a few things that helped us feel more informed and in control:

    1. Ask for a lead test

Even if your pediatrician hasn’t brought it up, you can request one. It is a simple blood test and can help catch exposure early, before symptoms appear.

    2. Take a closer look at what is in your pantry

Read the ingredient labels on snacks, especially if they include cassava, arrowroot, rice flour, or other root-based starches. These ingredients often show up in grain-free, gluten-free, and toddler-targeted foods, but they can carry a higher risk of heavy metal contamination.

    3. Use trusted resources

Two places we found incredibly helpful:

These sites share test results for snacks, utensils, formulas, dishes, and other everyday items.

    4. Look for brands that test and publish results

Some companies voluntarily test their products for heavy metals and post the results publicly. It takes extra effort to find them, but that kind of transparency gave us peace of mind. The pouches we buy now, ones that are regularly tested, cost almost four dollars each. It is a tradeoff, and not always an easy one, but for us it felt worth it while we worked through the options.

    5. Keep things simple when you can

We focused on fresh fruits, vegetables, and low-processed staples while we figured out which packaged foods we could trust. It is not about being perfect. Awareness is the first step, and informed choices can follow.

    Final Thoughts

I didn’t write this to scare anyone. I am not a doctor or an expert. I am just a parent who asked a question and got a troubling answer.

Lead exposure isn’t only an issue in old homes. It can show up in places most parents wouldn’t think to look, like snacks, pouches, and formulas made specifically for babies and toddlers.

It is also entirely possible that your child has consumed these same products and never had an elevated level. I have seen plenty of comments from parents who say their kids are fine, even after using snacks or pouches that tested high. I don’t know all the answers. Maybe it comes down to how much or how often something is eaten. Maybe it is something else entirely. This is just our experience, and I am sharing it in case it is helpful to someone who is trying to figure things out too.

You don’t have to do everything perfectly. But paying attention, asking questions, and staying curious can help you make decisions that feel right for your family.

  • 2025 Summer & Ongoing Programs for Ages 0–5 in Columbia and Spring Hill

2025 Summer & Ongoing Programs for Ages 0–5 in Columbia and Spring Hill

Looking for something more than just a drop-in event this summer for your baby or toddler?

You’re not alone. Most programs this time of year are geared toward school-aged kids, but that doesn’t mean the littlest ones have to miss out. Whether you’ve got a wobbly new walker, a busy preschooler, or something in between, there are local options made just for ages 0 to 5.

And if you’re just now thinking, “I should probably sign us up for something,” I get it. I didn’t start planning our summer until halfway through June either. The good news? It’s not too late.

This list includes music classes, art classes, dance classes, preschool gymnastics, and one VBS program that is still coming up. Some run just for summer, others go year-round, but they all take a little planning ahead.

If you’re looking for flexible, pop-in-when-you-can activities, you’ll still find those in the weekly and daily event posts. But if you’re ready to sign up for something with a little more structure, this is a great place to start.

    ✝️ Vacation Bible School (VBS)

Many local churches host Vacation Bible School (VBS) during the summer, typically in June or July. Since most are promoted directly through congregations and often focus on school-aged kids, this guide doesn’t include a list of every VBS in the area.

That said, we are including one program in July that still has openings for younger children and welcomes families from the community.

If your family is connected to a church, it’s always worth checking with them — many offer VBS programs that include preschoolers or even toddlers, especially if they’re potty-trained. And if you’re new to the area or not currently part of a church, some programs are happy to welcome visitors with open arms.

Just the Right Fit for Little Ones (and Tired Parents Too)

Whether you’re hoping to add a little rhythm to your week, fill a few mornings with something fun, or just try something new with your toddler, I hope this guide makes summer feel a little more doable.

Most of these programs still have space, but not for long. If one caught your eye, go ahead and check it out soon.

And remember, you don’t have to plan it all at once. Whether you register for a session, try a drop-in class, or save this for later, you’re doing a great job keeping your little one engaged this summer. I’ll keep sharing flexible, pop-in activities in the weekly and daily posts so when you’re ready for something spontaneous, those will still be waiting for you too.
